How To Make Better Decisions

The decisions we make today can affect us for the rest of our lives. So please choose wisely. Once a decision is made there are no do overs. With that being said why not do your best to make the right decisions the 1st time around.

Sure we all make mistakes, but there’s levels to it. Some mistakes have little effect and others can have life changing effects. Whether your mistakes are large or small, why not make as few mistakes as possible?

With that being said, I developed a cheat sheet that helps me make good decisions, ones that keep me focused on doing the right thing and staying out of trouble. This cheat sheet consist of 7 simple but very impactful questions to ask yourself before making decisions. The list is as follow:

  • Is it legal?
    • If something is illegal then it’s a no brainer that you should not carry on with that decision. If you get caught doing something illegal then you could spend get in big trouble and might find yourself spending a good amount of your time or the rest of your life in jail or prison. Why take a chance like that when you can make a legal good decision and keep your freedom?
  • Is it the right thing to do?
    • We learn right from wrong at a very early age, so there is no excuse to do wrong  when you know what’s right. If you know better then you should do better.  You need to do the right thing even when know one is watching.
  • Is it the best thing to do?
    • If you’re going to do anything then you should do your best. When you spend time trying to do what’s best for you, your family, or your friends then you are likely to be making a good decision.
  • Do I have to lie about it?
    • If you have to lie about a something you are about to do or a place you are about to go, or who you will be with then it’s a more than likely you shouldn’t be doing or going where you are about to go. So keep things simple and don’t go.
  • Could it cause me problems now or later?
    • Life is full of difficult times, if your situation you are about to do will cause you trouble now or later then a good decision would be to not do it. For instance, if you were going to steal something from the store that could cause you problems before you leave the store or sometime later after being seen on video, so a good decision would be to not steal from that store. You will avoid any problems now or later.
  • Is there anything else I can do?
    • Life is full of options, when attempting to make a good decision take the time to ask yourself “what else could I do?”, this will allow your brilliant mind to come up with various options and when you choose the best option you will have made yet another good decision.
  • Did I speak to someone respectable about it, like a positive Mentor, Pastor, Parent or Role Model?
    • This world is full of good people. When you are trying to make a good decision please understand that you don’t have to make that decision all by yourself. Develop a good support team of good people that will look out for your best interest and involve them in your decision making process. They will be able to offer you input from the outside looking in as they give you support for your decision making process.
